Spot on 'Saltcity' I am British but have quite a few close US friends and your analysis is as they would see it.
Americans have a very isolationist tunnel view of the outside even if the Sovereign State that represents them is imperialistic and expansionist.
In fact most Americans seem to at war with everyone who pokes their nose into the way they live day to day including their own Government Federal or State
I think you only need take a look at the many many thousands of newspaper and online thread comments and of mainstream media on anything to do with the US military action and almost to a person there is condemnation of the outsider- or even fellow American-criticising the US and its military or at best an 'ah yes, but you don't see the big picture and you have not been through what we have been through' defense and no shock or revulsion at all at the revelations of wrong doing any that are are quickly drowned out by fellow patriots, in fact to criticize any wrong doing is simply 'unpatriotic' or 'liberal' 'lefty' or 'socialist'.
Actually as British we are well used to Terrorism coming to us in our own homeland but Americans had a massive shock at 9/11 and I doubt non will ever forget or forgive that day-rightly so- anymore than they would Pearl Harbor so kind of understandable they feel the way they do and hostile to criticism.
That said I am not going to criticize the military, they have a job to do in very difficult circumstances and and they were sent there by Bush to do that.
Unfortunately in war, vile atrocities happen, troops get scared or gung-ho in an alien and dangerous environment where death is stalking them everywhere and keeping a lid on unprofessional behaviour when nerves are high is difficult and if your higher command is saying 'I ain't watching you guys I'm looking the other way' then these things are going to happen. No way is that an excuse but its a reality of any war and anyone who thinks this stuff is all new behaviour and down to US or British troops needs to seriously take a look at the history books on conflicts..the 20th century is just a small starter lesson on state approved military atrocities.
Far more people are murdered by the military of mainland China every year yet no one says a dicky bird because we do big business with them.We have an extra-ordinary ability to be selective about our moral indignation and about who and what we choose to criticize
Non of the US or UK military should be there out there risking their lives and the lives of ordinary civilians it was the wrong thing to do from the outset but that will be for history and the law to decide on in the future.
The trillions of dollars wasted bombing the shit out of Iraq and Afghanistan could have been spent more effectively on beefing up the homeland security of US territory and using a more covert approach at catching the real hard-core minority of extremists.Instead the invasions have only spawned tens of thousands more angry wood-be terrorists and made the US and UK more vulnerable not less.In the end the Afghans will come to a private deal with the Taliban and all the advantage gained by military victories will be wasted.

There is no point undermining the troops while they are there though, they have a shit job as it is and no doubt to a man would prefer to not be there.Better supervision of ops may help but the real post mortem on what happened and is happening, by necessity, has to be left till things are completed in whatever form that comes.
Its easy for millions to sit in the safety of their living room behind a screen and criticize when they are not there and not in that surreal and dangerous environment.
I think many seem to forget that luxury they are endowed with. Before computers we used to physically go demonstrate against the Government. and get beat up by the police.....far easier now -and safer- for many to abuse those at the front line from the comfort and security of a comfy armchair where they don't in reality have to commit effort -or blood maybe even their lives-to their protest!.......
+++++
Blah, blah, f*cking blah... Look at me... I read a book once (see above)... Look at me... I see a dot where someone slipped and died as opposed to getting ripped to pieces by a bomb... Opening up the possibility that all these dots represent people who fell over and dies as opposed to being victims of war!
Pathetic... This map for all its failings is a just graphical representation of just how many people have have died as a result of the agenda of the West.
Look at those dots... Has anyone anywhere in these comments apologised for that agenda? Anywhere in these comments, is there an apology for the amount of suffering inflicted as a result of this misguided agenda? Weapons of mass destruction my ass... Al Qaeda my ass...
The suffering of both the people of Iraq and of those naive enough to allow themselves to be sent abroad to be slaughtered for no reason other than to serve the agenda of self-serving Western politicians...
Man up everyone... Say it out loud... I am not going to slavishly defend the Bush agenda by pretending that these people were involved in 9/11... I am not going to slavishly follow the liberal agenda of saying I told you so... All of us sat on our backsides and let it happen....
Let is just say that we are sorry that your brother, sister, mother, father or child was killed... Full stop! it was a mistake... It was wrong... It should not happen any more!
I am sorry for what I have allowed to happen!.....

Paul Heyman: When Legends Meet History, Anything Can Happen

0 ความคิดเห็น
onight's Epic Main Event Between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 is the Type of Clash of Which Great Films Are Made!
It's obvious, when you meet Brock Lesnar, that you are in the presence of greatness..
A 6'3'', 265+ pound human being is not supposed to possess blinding speed and contortionist-level flexibility, but the former NCAA Divison I Heavyweight Champion from the University of Minnesota is not just any human being. He's gifted. "Blessed," he'll tell you (if he'll talk to you). Truly, a once-in-a-lifetime athlete.

I met Brock Lesnar shortly before Wrestlemania 2002. My first child, Azalea, was still in her mother's womb. So was Brock's first child, his daughter, Mya.

Brock had been in the then-developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling for over a year. It was time to move him up to the main roster.

I was only behind-the-scenes in WWE. I had successfully navigated my way off television after Survivor Series, but was about to go back on-air as "agent" for Chris Benoit, who was going to turn heel (villain) at Wrestlemania in Toronto.

It was actually Taz who introduced us. Brock was being given lame advice by jealous and envious veterans, and Taz knew it. Even though he was 5'8'', 248 pounds, Taz had convinced the public he was what only Brock could legitimately claim to be. The man with most legitimate claim to being the best fighter in the world.

That meeting changed my life.

I ended up being switched from Benoit to Brock. It turned out to be the biggest on-air break of my career. With the possible exception of the notoriety and recognition that comes along with being the "man behind the curtain at the Original ECW," the on-air association with Brock Lesnar has been what most people know me for.

Hey, that's my Hustle.

I'm proud of the fact that away from the spotlight, Brock and I developed a friendship. I am honored to be within the small circle of people with whom he chooses to deal. He's someone for whom I have a great deal of admiration and respect.

You may think that's "fight day talk," or some sugarcoated hyperbole on the day of the biggest pay per view event of Twenty Ten. But it's not. It's the truth. And I'll tell you why.

Brock Lesnar is everything he claims to be. He's a fiercely driven, obsessive athlete who hates losing almost as much as he loves to win. He's a devoted husband, who does not like to spend any time away from his wife, with whom he has built a life in the middle of nowhere, but to them it's "home," the greatest place on Earth. He's a dedicated father, one who adores his children and protects them from the very spotlight that has ruined so many famous people's offspring. He goes to sleep every night on his own property with the same woman, wakes up next to her every morning, and can't imagine any life besides that of "Ma and Pa Lesnar, Heads of the Family, Farmers, Just Very Private People."

Brock thrives on competition, but he does so because it invigorates and inspires him to push his gifts/blessings to the absolute limit ... and to exploit those talents to provide a better life for his family. He has a larger coaching and training staff than any fighter in UFC history, and the business he has built around himself is predicated on the evolution of a world champion fighter, the best in the world, the #1 pay per view attraction in the universe at this given time.

And yet, as I sit here, trying not to get caught looking across the breakfast table at my friend, the beast, the man, the animalistic competitor, the husband/son/brother/father, I can't help but think what must be going through his mind.

What did Babe Ruth think hours before the World Series? What was in Michael Jordan's head right before going into the final game of the NBA Finals? What must it have been like to sit with Muhammad Ali the day of The Thrilla in Manilla?

What must it be like sitting across from Cain Velasquez today?

Hey, I am the first to admit it. I am biased. Brock is not only someone I find mesmerizing as an athlete, but  someone for whom I have an undeniable personal affinity. I am not, however,  blinded by that friendship. I am, bluntly,  in awe of Cain Velasquez. There is no question the undefeated Mexican-American prodigy is, ironically, the UFC's "Next Big Thing."

And there's no doubt Cain views Brock as the gatekeeper, the God of War whose throne must be surrendered to the younger, yet more experienced heir to the throne. Eight men have entered a cage fight with Cain Velasquez. Eight professional pugilists whose confidence level was every bit as high as Cain's. Eight men who had every reason to believe they could stop this Latino juggernaut. Eight men who have trained, prepared, and readied themselves for a mixed martial arts encounter with the opponent with the Biblical name.

To the man, every one of those eight men have fallen.

Cain Velasquez has every reason to be quite confident going into this fight. His training facility? Top notch. His coaches? A-1. His mindset? Ready to become champion.

But then I look across the table, and I see my friend. The most ruthless competitor I have ever met. The most "game day" athlete in the world's most brutal yet technical sport. The farm boy who has no remorse, and only "kill or be killed" instincts bred into him from the day his father first took him out on the tractor to plow the Lesnar Family's fields.

Tonight, Brock Lesnar will step into the Octagon against Cain Velasquez. One man is going to win. Either Lesnar will be dethroned, or Cain Velasquez will have to learn, for the first time since college, how to handle the awful, bitter taste of defeat.

There's no other option in the fight game. The very nature of the battle ensures that someone must lose in order for someone to win. A man has to victimize the other, in order to advance his own cause, his own bank account, his own career.

Marty Morgan has a game plan. Brock Lesnar has, well, he has Brock Lesnar. And all the gifts and lessons and ability that goes along with being Brock Lesnar.

Because tonight, when they lock the doors of the Octagon, and referee Herb Dean asks Brock and Cain "fighter, are you ready?" there's only one thing Brock Lesnar can rely on. The fact he has what it takes to remain the Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion of the World. The Baddest Dude on the Planet.

Because in his mind, those two descriptions only fit one man in the world.

And that man's name is Brock Lesnar.

I start to mentally diminish in the evening, and homework becomes seemingly impossible to do since I'm so drained. I just started taking Double X in the morning and then again at the onset of my evening. The difference is amazing! I stay on top of my homework until it's complete! I would never have hoped for this effect from a multivitamin/multimineral/phytonutrient combo, but now I know I can come to expect this. This is great for any students or persons with intense occupations!
+++++
XX makes me feel Naturally Energetic - NOT Jumpy or BUZZED, but just alert, aware, and ready to take on ANYTHING...
I used to feel as though I needed a nap in the morning of all things - Not Any More...Magnificient Stuff.!.
+++++++
I initially became an IBO because of the Double X® Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient. I've never felt an effect from other supplements, but once I started taking Double X it was an almost immediate energizing effect. I also have a general sense of calm and well-being while on the supplement.
If you tried to buy the ingredients in Double X individually through other suppliers, it would get very costly and probably wouldn't be as effective due to variances in efficacy and quality control standards. This supplement alone would be able to sustain a business, because everyone needs it. I'm just glad we have such a great product to introduce customers to the kind of quality they can expect in all of our product lines.

Sir Alex: Rooney Wants To Leave United,Reviews sir Alex man u

0 ความคิดเห็น

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United.

At a news conference at Old Trafford, the manager told reporters: "I had a meeting with him. He intimated to me in his own way that he wanted to leave.
"We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can't quite understand why he would want to leave."
Rooney's current contract expires in 2012 and there had been widespread speculation the star striker did not want to sign a new deal with the club.
Sir Alex denied having an argument with the 24-year-old footballer, but said he told Rooney to show "respect" forManchester United.
"The one thing I said to him was: 'Respect this club, I don't want any nonsense from you'," Sir Alex said.
"I don't know if he has done that. I have doubts on that, we are reading all these things about falling out with me and all that nonsense.
"It's disappointing because we have done everything we possibly can to help Wayne Rooney ever since he came to the club."
The manager also said Rooney would not play in Wednesday night's Champions League match against Bursaspor because he has an ankle injury.
While the England star appeared to move freely at training on Tuesday, Sir Alex claimed Rooney was carried off on a stretcher after news cameras had left the session.

Super Typhoon Megi hits northern Philippines

Typhoon Megi makes landfall with heavy rain and winds
An intense "super typhoon" has made landfall in the northern Philippines, lashing the area with heavy rain and winds of up to 225km/h (140mph).
At least one person has been reported killed, and thousands have fled their homes. Emergency services are on alert, and many schools are closed.
Typhoon Megi is the strongest storm the Philippines has faced for four years.
In 2006, a storm with winds of 155km/h triggered mudslides, burying villages and killing about 1,000 people.
Tropical cyclones formed in the Pacific Ocean are called typhoons, but are classified on a scale of one to five in the same way as Atlantic Ocean hurricanes.
Strong typhoons with sustained winds of at least 130 knots (150mph; 240km/h), are referred to as super typhoons, according to the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Forecasters said Megi was a super typhoon as it made landfall, but weakened slightly as it made its way across the northern Philippines.

Love Ever After: How My Husband Became My Spirit Guide [Paperback]

 Reader Reviews:oh Book Best !

I gave this book to my Mother after her husband died and as she has already had a number of experiences with her Dad and Grandmother after they passed, she was very receptive and comforted by Joy's message.

As a result, she has allowed herself to stretch her awareness to maintaining and developing her relationships with her departed loved ones as have I.

I am so grateful for this book. It has opened so many minds of the people I know who have read it to the possibility that even though a loved one is not physically present, the relationships can go on and be even better -- because the departed is no longer limited by the earthly perspective, but now have a more expanded view that can also be very helpful and they continue to lovingly guide and connect with us from beyond.

We just have to keep our minds and hearts open and choose to connect with them. It is so rewarding!

Judith Malin......

Joy's book is a very important piece for todays world; as many are now exploring the possibility of life after death, reincarnation and multidimensional states of consciousness.

Love Ever After, gives a clear, easy to read account of Joy's personal experience with communication from her husband who had passed to the other side.

The read is enjoyable and down to earth, filled with recounts from everyday life that everyone can relate to.

I could not put it down! I read the whole book in one night!

Her story can be of great service to those who grieve over the loss of a loved one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves another.

This book can give hope, peace and comfort to many.

Thank you Joy for writing this book.

Suzanne Copeland

Wife, Mother, Grand Mother,Therapist

This book inspired me to realize that communication and love does not end with the demise of the physical body. I was fortunate enough to meet Joy Mitchell Lisker before her own passage. She consistently received guidance from her deceased husband and the continued outpouring of love supported her enjoyment of the rest of her own life to the fullest. The information I received from this book has helped me connect with my departed father in a loving and healing communication. Thank you, Joy, forever!

Roger Federer, reflecting on his loss to Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open semifinls, has admitted the scheduling pressures of playing the second semifinal played on his mind during the match and believes Djokovic may also have been affected.

The winner of the five-set semifinal faced the prospect of playing the final the very next day against Rafael Nadal, who had played the earlier semifinal and won in three sets.

Djokovic saved two match points to defeat Federer and lost to Nadal in a four-set final that was delayed till Monday because of rain.
"I think the biggest problem for me back in New York was obviously missing match points, but that goes without saying," Federer told reporters in Shanghai after winning his semifinal rematch against Djokovic. "I think I had too much of my mind focusing maybe already on the upcoming match I had to play the next day if I were to win.

"It wasn’t just Rafa, who won that match before us, I just think the short recovery time made it hard on both of us to focus on what we really had to do.

"I think I maybe let a game here or there go a bit too quick and next thing you know, it’s the second or fourth set went by in a hurry. That at the end came back to haunt me. I think that was the biggest problem for me."

Federer appears to hold out hope that the Super Saturday format can be changed. The U.S. Open holds both men's semifinals and the women's semifinals on the second Saturday to accomodate long-time broadcaster CBS.

"Overall I still think it was a good match," said Federer. "I could have won, should have won -- obviously, that was the disappointing part.

"Who knows, maybe we’ll get to change the Saturday/Sunday format at the US Open. We’ll see."

The USTA and CBS are currently in talks to renew their contract, which expires next year.

If you really want to develop your game to a more efficient and consistent level, this book will help showing the patterns of play and the drills that cover them.

Good book with excellent information. Love the drawings of what the author(s) are describing, making it easier to visualize tactics. Definitely a book for your reference library.

HIV:New wording for positive convict, new person get hiv ,top of the town"AIDS"

A New sentencing hearing has been ordered for a HIV-positive man convicted of not disclosing his health status to his sex partners.

Clato Mabior was convicted in 2008 of six counts of aggravated assault and other charges and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Mabior appealed his conviction, arguing his “viral load” was so low his sex partners were at no significant risk of infection.

In a decision released Friday, the Manitoba Court of Appeal said the sentencing judged erred in ruling that both an undetectable viral load and the use of a condom are required to escape criminal liability.

“The Supreme Court of Canada has held that there must be a significant risk of the transmission of the virus before criminal sanctions will attach to lack of disclosure,” wrote Justice Freda Steel.

The appeal court ordered that Mabior have a new sentencing hearing on the charges for which he has been convicted.

“The focus of the accused’s appeal was on the question of ‘significant risk’ and its application to the medical evidence,” Steel wrote. “No argument was directed to the question of whether a charge of aggravated sexual assault was appropriate in this type of case. Given the absence of legal argument, it would be appropriate to rule on that issue.”

One of Mabior’s six victims was 12 years old at the time of the offences and three were 17. None of his victims have been diagnosed with HIV.

Defence lawyer Ian MacNair said Mabior used a condom every time he had sex with two of the victims.

At the time of Mabior’s March 2006 arrest, police believed as many as 45 girls and women might have been victimized by him. He stood trial in relation to 11 alleged victims.

Prior to his arrest, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority issued a public warning Mabior was defying medical advice about his HIV and knowingly having sex with unsuspecting partners.

Police said they believed Mabior had been luring runaways to his Sherbrook Street home with the promise of intoxicants and a place to stay. At his trial, court heard Mabior plied some of his victims with alcohol and drugs.

Mabior is from Sudan and is expected to be deported once he has served his sentence.

Storm Paula Miami Florida

0 ความคิดเห็น
Miami, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Paula was moving along the north coast of western Cuba on Thursday, bringing heavy rain and high winds to the island nation despite being downgraded from hurricane status, forecasters said.
As of 11 a.m., the center of Paula was about 110 miles (180 kilometers) west-southwest of the Cuban capital, Havana, the Miami, Florida-based National Hurricane Center said. It was moving east-northeast at about 6 mph (9 kph), but was expected to turn east later Thursday.
"On this track, Paula will continue to hug the north coast of western Cuba or move inland over Cuba today," forecasters said. "Tropical storm-force winds should be spreading across western Cuba today, primarily along the north coast. Winds could begin to increase over the lower and middle Florida Keys late today."
The storm's maximum sustained winds were 70 mph (110 kph), just below hurricane status. Paula remained a small storm, with tropical storm-force winds extending 45 miles (75 kilometers) from its center.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Cuba's westernmost provinces, Pinar del Rio and la Habana, or Havana, and for the city of Havana, the Hurricane Center said.
A tropical storm watch also was in effect for the Florida Keys, from Craig Key westward, including the Dry Tortugas.
Emergency management officials in the Keys said Wednesday they were keeping an eye on the progress of Paula and expected some gusty winds and rain, but no protective actions had been initiated. Forecasters predict the center of Paula will remain south of the Keys.
Paula is likely to dump an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain over portions of western and central Cuba over the next two days, the National Hurricane Center said. Isolated total maximum amounts could be 10 inches in some areas. Heavy rain could trigger flash floods and mudslides, forecasters said. The Florida Keys could see about an inch of rain.
In addition, a storm surge is forecast to raise water levels by 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels along the coast of western Cuba, accompanied by "large and destructive waves," the Hurricane Center said.
The storm is forecast to continue weakening and could become a tropical depression Friday, forecasters said.

UFO over Manhattan Caught on Tape Was Mystery Shiny Object Superman? Balloon? Looking for Its Mother Ship?!

(CBS)  A mysterious shiny, silvery object floating high over Manhattan Wednesday had even jaded New Yorkers scratching their heads.

Dozens of people were stopped in the middle of the sidewalks of the Chelsea neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side, looking up in the sky.

One speculated it was a balloon, another joked that it was Superman or Superwoman, and yet another wondered whether whatever it was was simply "looking for the mother ship!"

The city says its 311 help line got dozens of calls about the object.

And city officials haven't provided any answers about what it might have been - though they're said to be leaning toward the balloon camp.

Source: Jermichael Finley could be done for the season

0 ความคิดเห็น
The hits just keep coming for the Green Bay Packers.

Tight end Jermichael Finley, who has emerged as perhaps Aaron Rodgers’ top target, could miss the remainder of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Initial reports were that Finley would miss three to six weeks with the injury. However, a league source said that the recovery time will be more like six to 10 weeks and if it’s at that outer limit, Finley’s availability for this season will be very much in doubt.
Finley and his backup Donald Lee were both injured in Sunday’s overtime loss at Washington and the Packers are reeling with injuries. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a concussion. Outside linebacker Clay Matthews is now banged up and might miss some time. They’re at the top of a long list.
The Packers have already lost starting running back Ryan Grant for the season, and any time without Finley will be a significant loss for the passing game. Because so many players are banged up and the team has three players who could eventually be coming off the physically unable to perform list, including veteran safety Atari Bigby, there might not be room to carry Finley on the 53-man roster until December, when he could potentially return. A decision does not need to be made immediately by the team, but there is no way Finley will be back in the next month.

The good news for Finley, 23, is that meniscus repairs typically do not create problems for the player longterm. The bad news is the Packers have been hit by so many injuries they might not see him back in action until 2011. Again, Finley could potentially be back in about six weeks, but that would really fast track his return and it’s too soon to tell exactly how he will respond.

Workers prepare to rescue trapped Chilean miners Editor's note: CNN.com will be streaming live from beginning to end the rescue attempts at a Chilean mine where 33 men have been trapped since August 5. Click here for full coverage on the Chile mine disaster.

[Updated at 8:33 p.m. ET] The capsule has been lowered - unoccupied - into the rescue shaft as part of final tests before the miners' rescue begins.

After the tests, the capsule will lower rescue personnel to the miners' refuge about 2,300 feet below the surface, one at a time. Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne has said he hopes at least one miner will be brought to the surface by the end of the day.

[Updated at 8:24 p.m. ET] The capsule is dangling above the rescue shaft, and we're awaiting word on when a rescuer will be lowered into the miners' refuge. Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne had said tests would be done before the rescue effort will begin.

[Updated at 8:14 p.m. ET] Less than an hour to go before rescuers may begin lowering fellow rescuers to the miners' refuge via the capsule that will be used to lift the miners to the surface, according to a timeline given earlier by Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne.

To get an idea of the path that the rescue capsule will take between the surface and the miners' refuge, check out this interactive graphic, which also includes information about each of the 33 trapped miners. It will be updated throughout the rescue to reflect which miners have been lifted to the surface.

Also, this video shows the inside of the capsule and some of the preparations that rescuers were making earlier today.

The rescue capsule was put upright at about 7:50 p.m. ET Tuesday. Some rescuers are expected to be lowered to the miners

[Updated at 7:42 p.m. ET] At least another 80 minutes to go before rescuers may start to lower the rescue capsule to the miners, according to a timeline given earlier by Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne.

CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta discusses the health risks that the miners face during and after their rescue, including issues such as the condition of their lungs and changes in pressure.

[Updated at 7:31 p.m. ET] CNN's Brian Todd tells us about Florencio Avalos, who is expected to be the first miner who will be brought to the surface:

[Updated at 7:12 p.m. ET] Tests will begin at the San Jose mine in Chile using the rescue capsule before the actual rescue, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said. He estimated it would be at least two hours before the rescue effort starts.

[Updated at 7:01 p.m. ET] It will be at least another two hours before rescuers will lower the capsule half a mile below the ground to the miners, Chilean authorities say. Meanwhile, the first four miners to be rescued have been identified, according to CNN Chile: Florencio Avalos, Mario Sepulveda, Carlos Mamani and Juan Illanes.

[Updated at 6:41 p.m. ET] A mining rescuer will be the first person to descend, followed by a medical specialist, officials say.

Meanwhile, a UCLA emergency has talked to CNN about medical challenges that the miners could face during and after their rescue.

[Updated at 6:25 p.m. ET] The miner who recorded the daily activities of the trapped miners in Chile will be the first one rescued, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera says. The world will be watching as Florencio Avalos, 31, is extracted from the San Jose mine after 68 days of captivity, together with 32 others.

[Updated at 6:07 p.m. ET] The first member of the rescue team is expected to be lowered into the shaft around 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. local time. A team of paramedics and rescuers will go down first to assess the situation.

Each miner will be hauled up in a capsule wearing an oxygen mask for the 2,000 feet ascent, which is expected to take around 15 minutes per person.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera speaks to reporters Tuesday at the San Jose mine.

[Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET] President Sebastian Pinera arrives at the San Jose mine site Tuesday afternoon and tours the area before the start of the rescue.

"Today's the end of a long journey," Pinera said. "This story started as a possible tragedy, and we hope that it ends as a blessing."

Chile is a country that reacts well to adversity, the president said, addressing the crowd of international media that has gathered for the event.

Even so, he noted that the miners would not be the same once they emerged, just as the ordeal has had a profound effect on Chile.

Chilean rescue workers will be using this chamber to try and bring each miner up to the surface.

[Posted at 4:00 p.m. ET] After 68 days trapped underground in a mine in Chile, workers are prepared to begin rescuing the first of the 33 men.

Earlier in the day the concrete base built for the winch system at the San Jose Mine has hardened, paving the way for the rescue of the miners to start tonight, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said.

The winch that will pull the trapper miners out in Chile will extract them at .7 meters (2.3 feet) per second, Health Minister Jaime Malanich said. In case of emergency, the speed of ascension can be increased to 3 meters (9.8 feet) per second.

Oprah and Mark Fuhrman’s Lovefest

0 ความคิดเห็น
Oprah has been on a sentimental journey this last year of her show and she is bringing back memorable guests from the past. Today she brought back Mark Fuhrman. Fuhrman achieved fame or infamy depending on what you think of him from his involvement in the OJ Simpson case. She just let him come on and free flow today. Let him tell it everyone on that case screwed up, but him and his partner. He called the jury “morally bankrupt.” I was amazed that Winfrey let him sit and tell his truth virtually uninterrupted. Fuhrman castigated the media and Oprah asked him if he hated the media so why was he now on Fox News? His response boiled down to they are different. This was an opportunity for him to recite his truth and Oprah provided him with the podium. The jury saw all the evidence we didn’t. We all have our opinions on the case, but they looked at the facts and since they did not see it like the majority did their intelligence is often questioned. The prosecution had a duty to convince the jury of OJ’s guilt and they failed. So to sit and hearFuhrman say they were blinded by celebrity makes me sick, but to have Oprah nod in agreement made me sicker.

Note: the clip shows the kind of guy Fuhrman really is.

Microsoft Already Planning Copy/Paste Support for Windows Phone 7

0 ความคิดเห็น
Though most of this morning’s Windows Phone 7 launch focused on features and handsets that will be immediately available to users, Microsoft still managed to tease some upcoming additions to its new mobile OS.
When Windows Phone 7 was first announced, one major feature omission was the ability to copy and paste. Instead, Microsoft said that it would offer some context-aware options for easily transferring numbers, names and addresses, without the need for a full copy/paste system. That’s changed.
During today’s launch, Microsoft announced that it plans to bring true copy and paste support to Windows Phone 7 in early 2011. This is good news for users who want to take advantage of Windows Phone 7 integration with Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
Copy and paste is a subject familiar to many iOS users’ hearts. Before the release of the iPhone OS 3.0, the iPhone famously lacked support for copy and paste. Like Microsoft, Apple tried to play off the feature’s importance, but I think we can all agree that the iOS experience was made much, much better after the copy and paste option was finally introduced.
Does Microsoft’s plans for copy and paste change your opinion of Windows Phone 7?

Most Believe America Should Still Honor Columbus with National Holiday

0 ความคิดเห็น
It’s Columbus Day, and although most Americans say we should continue to honor Christopher Columbus’ achievement with a national holiday, not nearly as many consider it the most important.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of Adults feel that America should continue to honor Columbus with a national holiday.  Just 27% disagree and say we should not devote a national holiday to him, while 15% more are not sure.  (To see survey question wording.)
These findings show little change from this time last year.
But only nine percent (9%) consider Columbus Day to be one of our nation’s most important holidays. Thirty-seven percent (37%) see it as the least important, while roughly half (51%) say it’s somewhere in between.  These numbers have held relatively steady over the past few years.
(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls).  Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.
The survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on October 7-8, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Still, an overwhelming 72% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Columbus, including 32% who have a Very Favorable opinion of him. Nineteen percent (19%) hold an unfavorable opinion of the explorer.
Men view Columbus slightly more favorably than women, while adults over the age of 40 view America’s founder in a more positive light than younger adults.

Lovefilm looks to be headed to UK PlayStation 3 consoles,ps3

You Americans may not have a clue what Lovefilm means to Britons, but in short, it's Netflix for the other side of the pond. To that end, we imagine quite a few UKers are giddy over a video that has since been pulled from Sony's YouTube channel. We've embedded it after the break in case it revives itself in some magical, mystical fashion, but Everything PlayStation managed to grab the copy from underneath while it was still alive. It's bruited that Lovefilm streaming will be coming to UK-based PS3 owners sometime this autumn, with a wealth of search options available and free trials promised for those who've yet to buy into the outfit's services. We're hoping to hear more from Sony (or Lovefilm) in short order, but for now, we'd encourage you to cross every finger you have that a dedicated disc won't be required for everything to work.

Tom Hicks Loses Round One In UK Legal Battle

0 ความคิดเห็น
There, on the High Court of Justice Chancery Division's to-do list tomorrow, is one of two U.K. cases in which locals will keep a close eye: Royal Bank of Scotland PLC v Hicks & Others. As in: Tom Hicks, from whom the Royal Bank of Scotland wants the money owed over Liverpool FC's deep, deep debts. The English papers are reporting this morning: The bank at last week's end won a temporary injunction that keeps Hicks from shaking up the soccer team's board of directors. Tomorrow's court date is intended to settle the matter once and for all.

At stake: a sale of Liverpool FC to New England Sports Ventures, owners of the Boston Red Sox. Last week, as we noted, Liverpool's existing board OK'd the deal. At which point Hicks said: No effing way. NESV is willing to cough up £300 million; Hicks, who's said publicly he wants to recoup his losses from the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars' sales using Liverpool lucre, wants more than twice that. Which is why he tried to oust LFC managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre and install son Mack and Hicks Holdings's comptroller Lori Kay McCutcheon. Hicks and co-owner George Gillett stand to lose £254 million if and when the NESV deal goes down.

A second legal action, brought by LFC chairman Martin Broughton against Hicks and his efforts to oust the board and quash the sale to NESV, goes to court in the U.K. later in the week. U.K. legal experts expect that too won't end well for Hicks.

3 shockingly bizarre things about Christopher Columbus,NYC 2010

0 ความคิดเห็น

Every second Monday in October, we celebrate Columbus Day in honor of the day Columbus “discovered” America. Without a doubt, it was a great accomplishment for 15th century Europeans and everyone likes a good holiday.
But is what we teach kids about Columbus the truth? Was the man we celebrate worthy of celebration? Columbus was an interesting dude, but what you think you know might be completely untrue. And that whole world-was-flat thing? Read on.
1. His name wasn’t Christopher Columbus
Let’s start with a simple item: his name. Columbus’ might not have had an Italian name. Instead, he might have had a Genoese name.
This actually becomes an interesting discussion of the self-referential nature of the Web. If you do a search on Columbus’ name, you’ll find that his father’s name was apparently Corombo. But if you keep digging, you’ll find that Wikipedia, referencing “Rime diverse, Pavia,” written in 1595, states that Columbus’ name was actually Christoffa Corombo.
The question is: was it? Interestingly enough, a Web search on “Christoffa Corumbo” shows a lot of references, including mainstream media reports, using that name. But there’s not a single scholarly reference to Christoffa anywhere (well, unless you consider the game Assassin’s Creed II to be scholarly).
He’s also been refered to as Christoff Columb, and a variety of other variations. The real truth is we don’t know his real name, but it was almost undoubtedly not Christopher Columbus.
2. Columbus wasn’t a great leader, he was a brutal one.
You may not know it, but Christopher Columbus (or whatever his name was), spent six weeks in jail. Eight years after landing in the New World, Columbus and his brothers were thrown into jail by Ferdinand and Isabella.
According to Consuelo Varela, a historian at Spain’s Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas and reported in the Christian Science Monitor, Columbus was a tyrant during his time as governor of Hispaniola.
He was apparently a big fan of using torture and slavery to keep his constituents in line (insert poor-taste joke about Congress here). Apparently, the level of brutality was so great that the rulers of Spain had enough, slapped him in chains, and threw him in jail.
Given that Ferdinand and Isabella were the warm, gentle folks who started up the Spanish Inquisition, you’d have to think that Columbus had to be pretty nasty to even begin to show up on their radar.
3. He didn’t think the world was flat.
We’ve all been taught that 15th century sailors thought the world was flat. One of Columbus’ biggest contributions to modern thought was the conclusion, based on his adventures, that the world was, in fact, a giant ball.
According to Paul Boller who wrote Not So!:Popular Myths about America from Columbus to Clinton, most educated people of Columbus’ day thought the world was spherical.
They weren’t sure about the size, Boller says, but the roundness was accepted and had been for centuries.
Apparently, it wasn’t until Washington Irving wrote his book about Columbus in 1828 that we all started believing that they all believed the world was flat.
What’s true?
Time fogs our understanding of what really happened. Archeologists and academics are hard at work trying to truly understand who Columbus was and what he really accomplished.
In the meantime, as you celebrate Columbus Day, remember that not all is as you’ve been taught, not all is as it seems, and not everything those in positions of power, authority, or influence tell you is true.
Keep that in mind when you vote next month.
Happy Columbus Day, and I’ll grill a burger for ya!

Columbus is a hero to members of my ethnic heritage, so if you think I am going to jump on the bandwagon about how he brought misery and misfortune to the indigenous people of the Americas or was so unfathomably stupid that when he discovered us he thought he had arrived in India, well you can just disabuse yourself of that notion right now. Besides, I can still remember the time I happened to be in San Francisco during the Columbus Day Parade, and it was so much fun that if anyone had decided to harsh my mellow by even hinting that Columbus was an imperialist oppressor, I might have been inclined to, at the very least, freeze him or her out emotionally.
The fact is it's time for Columbus Day weekend. The guy has a national holiday named after him. Let's just give him the props he deserves instead of being so quick to judge him for smallpox or enslavement or whatever.
Here, then, are, the top 10 reasons Christopher Columbus kicks ass:
You heard right. In the year 1500, long after he landed in the Americas, Columbus was put in manacles and tossed into the big house. Word was he had committed atrocities against some Spanish people at this other place he was colonizing, but we can assume the charges were trumped up by a bunch of ungrateful locals who probably just couldn't handle how righteous he was. I've never been in prison, but I've seen The Wire and The Shawshank Redemption, and if Columbus had to go through anything like that, he had to have been a bad ass. And he probably had some tats of maps on his biceps.
