Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United.
At a news conference at Old Trafford, the manager told reporters: "I had a meeting with him. He intimated to me in his own way that he wanted to leave.
"We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can't quite understand why he would want to leave."
Rooney's current contract expires in 2012 and there had been widespread speculation the star striker did not want to sign a new deal with the club.
Sir Alex denied having an argument with the 24-year-old footballer, but said he told Rooney to show "respect" forManchester United.
"The one thing I said to him was: 'Respect this club, I don't want any nonsense from you'," Sir Alex said.
"I don't know if he has done that. I have doubts on that, we are reading all these things about falling out with me and all that nonsense.
"It's disappointing because we have done everything we possibly can to help Wayne Rooney ever since he came to the club."
The manager also said Rooney would not play in Wednesday night's Champions League match against Bursaspor because he has an ankle injury.
While the England star appeared to move freely at training on Tuesday, Sir Alex claimed Rooney was carried off on a stretcher after news cameras had left the session.
