Syracuse Football fans can now say that they were the very first winners of the Pinstripe Bowl. Overcoming a horrible start in the inaugural Pinstripe bowl Syracuse rallied back to win.
Delone Carter ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns, Marcus Sales caught three long TD passes and Syracuse got some help from a celebration penalty on Kansas State to beat the Wildcats 36-34.
The Pinstripe Bowl (titled via sponsorship as the New Era Pinstripe Bowl) is a college football bowl game that will be held annually at the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx section of New York, New York beginning on December 30, 2010
It was Big East against the Big 12 in the first bowl game in New York since the Gotham Bowl matched Nebraska and Miami at the original Yankee Stadium in 1962. The weather was pretty much as expected: cold.
But temperatures in the 30s were more than tolerable for the crowd of 38,274 more than 44,000 tickets were sold, the Yankees said especially considering 16 inches of snow got dumped on the city four days earlier. And the snow piled as much as 8 feet high next to the outfield walls and behind the end zone where home plate usually sits just added to the scenery.
The Yankees have deemed the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl a success.
“The financial story of this bowl game has been outstanding,” said Yankees president Randy Levine, in a news conference held two hours before kickoff. “We’ve already exceeded our budget, and that’s with a few unexpected snow removal dollars. We have well over 40,000 seats sold to this game.”
Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost said the exact number was 44,133, at the time of the news conference. That includes over 6,000 tickets which were given away to charity groups and armed-forces veterans.
